Description
Exquisite Japanese Meiji period (early 20th Century), solid silver large six-piece tea and coffee service on tray. Magnificent quality with double walled, chased, embossed with amazingly detailed fish and dragons in very high relief. The set comprises of a coffee pot, a kettle on a stand, a creamer, a covered sugar bowl and a tea caddy. The handles are formed of dragons with elongated flowing whiskers and the walls are formed of detailed flocks of fish. Hallmarked with 'Samurai Shokai, Yokohama'. Pure Silver (950+ high grade silver). The tray is massive, the combined weight of tray alone is 7 352 grams ; Combined weight of set without tray : 4 820 grams . TOTAL WEIGHT: 12 172 grams. A bit of history: "Founded by Japanese businessman Yozo Nomura (1870-1965), Samurai Shokai was one of the most famous luxury shops in Japan during the early 20th century. After abandoning his university studies and traveling to America and Europe, Yozo Namura moved back to Yokohama, near Tokyo where he opened a small luxury shop selling not only silver but also jades, lacquerware, silks and porcelain. The company quickly grew and to satisfy its international clientele, Nomura became a pioneer in offering a mail order service. Samurai Shokai became one of the main purveyors to the Imperial Japanese Household, and to the chief Museums of the world. Samurai Shokai exhibited in London at the Anglo-Japanese fair in 1910 gaining further popularity in Europe." The sizes: Tray: 34.5" w x 25" d x 4" h. Coffee pot: 12" h x 10" w x 5.5"d. Kettle + burner stand : 14.25" h x 9" w x 7"d. Tea Caddy: 4" h x 7" w x 4" d. Sugar bowl: 5" h x 7" w x 5" d. Creamer: 4" h x 7" w x 5"d.

Revised Condition Report: 1. Large Coffee pot handle has areas where it has been pushed inwards. 2. Large Coffee pot hinge and base have been welded (repaired). 3. Large tray handle is pushed inwards. 4. Sugar bowl cover, has a bump, the double chased wall is pushed inwards. (the piece is in high relief, it goes unnoticed) 5. Tea caddy has an uneven top rim. 6. Kettle has a crack near base of the handle.
