PROPERTY FORMERLY IN THE ROBERTO VILLANUEVA COLLECTION

Early 19th Century
Molave
christ: H: 53” x L: 34” x W: 8” (135 cm x 86 cm x 20 cm)
crucifix: H: 103” x L: 45” x W: 11” (262 cm x 114 cm x 28 cm)

Provenance:
Manila
Robert Vilanueva Collection
Acquired from the above by Ramon N. Villegas

This large crucifix depicting a Cristo Moribundo or dead Christ is beautifully carved and anatomically correct in the delineation of the muscles and, particularly, in the carving of the private parts of Christ, something that is rarely seen in Philippine colonial iconography. The way the pubic hair of the figure is rendered is most interesting, as every hair is arranged symmetrically.

The image still has most of its original polychrome and was meant to have a wig, hence the bald pate.

-Martin I. Tinio, Jr.
