Cizhou Painted Green Vase, Ming Dynasty
Item Details
Description
Green glaze and black pigment, pottery
China, Ming dynasty
Dimensions (height) 11 1/8 in. (28 cm)
Fair condition
Provenance: Property from the Private Collection of Ugo Piccirillo, New York

The extraordinary creatures painted on this Cizhou turquoise ground vase make this vase a rare example. The decoration is painted in black with a decisive hand. The features and lines that make up the mythical creatures, crashing waves, flames influenced by the Middle East and craggy rocks, are deliberate and not diminishing or delicate. The robust ovoid form is covered in a rich emerald green glaze that extends until the exposed clay foot.

Provenance

Property from the Private Collection of Ugo Piccirillo, New York

Condition

There is a 1 5/8 inch long portion of the mouth rim that has separated but is retained (currently held in place with impermanent adhesive). Otherwise no apparent condition issues.

Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
