Japanese Sterling Silver Jewelry Box
Item Details
Description
Japanese Sterling Silver Jewelry Box, first quarter 20th century, of rectangular form with trefoil finial handle and wooden base, the whole engraved with prunus, chrysanthemum, iris and bamboo, expanding by means of strap-locks and accordion-action bars to reveal three burgundy velvet-lined trays, h. 5-1/4", (7-1/2" open), w. 5-1/4", d. 3-7/8" (11-3/4" open).
Condition
Overall Condition: Good. In generally good condition, with minor scattered nicks and scuffs. One of the supporting legs on the reverse is a later silverplate replacement, marked with the WMF, Geislingen, Germany "ostrich mark" in use in the first quarter of the 20th century. This leg is clearly a replacement, and the box is certainly of Japanese origin. The hinge on the front hasp has some wear to the knuckles, but is intact and fully functional. Marked "Sterling Silver" on the underside rear edge. Interior velvet is clean, intact and in good condition.
