Fossilized Siberian Juvenile Wooly Mammoth Tusk
Item Details
Description
Northeastern Asia, Russia, Siberia, Yakut, Pleistocene, ca. 2 million to 10,000 years ago. A remarkable tusk from a juvenile woolly mammoth, a large fragment containing the tip! The exterior of this tusk is beautifully polished to bring out the stunning colorations of the enamel. The woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) is the most iconic species of the Ice Age, and early humans stalked and hunted these mammals before their extinction. Folk-memories of megafauna persisted into more recent times, and the Inuit had a legendary creature known as the "kilivfaq," based on the occasional finds of massive tusks and even preserved mammoth bodies in the permafrost - often eroding out of the sides of riverbanks. The name mammoth comes from a Siberian word used to describe the tusks found there by native people, like the Khanty of the Irtysh River basin. Size: 11.75" L x 1.6" W (29.8 cm x 4.1 cm); 7" H (17.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-Tucson, Arizona, USA collection
