Nixon in China, 1972 | Mini-Archive of NBC Correspondent
Item Details
Description
A mini-archive of material related to Nixon’s landmark 1972 trip to China, from the personal papers of longtime NBC News Correspondent Fred Montague. Montague was a presidential correspondent for NBC News who covered every administration from Johnson to George H. W. Bush. He was part of the retinue of journalists who accompanied Nixon on the diplomatic trip that reset the terms of the Cold War, and ultimately helped pave the way for the emergence of China as a major international power. Included here are Montague’s handwritten notes detailing every day of the trip, six official invitations to banquets or events hosted by the Chinese during the trip, photographs, Montague’s scrapbook, official White House-provided documents, and multiple pieces of ephemera. (A complete inventory is available upon request). Also included are six items pertaining to the development of Sino-American relations post-1972, including invitations to events during Kissinger’s trip to China in 1975, invitations to events hosted at the “Liaison Office of the PRC” in 1974 and 1975, and several Chinese English-language publications. In total, nearly forty items from one of the pivotal events in 20th-Century international affairs.
